Director of Governmental Affairs
Jay Atkins is Director of Governmental Affairs for the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Jay works closely with the legislative affairs team in its effort to protect and advance Missouri business by advocating for pro-business legislation and policy in the State Capitol. Jay works directly with the state’s elected officials to help ensure the business community’s interests are represented as proposed laws advance through the legislative process. His focus areas are tort reform, employment law, civil justice, energy and the environment, education reform, ethics, elections and initiative petitions.
Jay brings a wealth of experience to his role for the Missouri Chamber. Most recently, he served as legislative director for the Missouri Departments of Natural Resources and Revenue, where he managed the development, drafting and implementation of the departments’ legislative and policy agendas. Prior to serving as legislative director Jay was an Assistant Attorney General in the Missouri Attorney General’s office’s Public Safety Division where he represented the state’s interest in more than thirty-five jury trials across the state.
Jay is a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the Army National Guard. He graduated summa cum laude from Missouri State University with a B.S. in socio-political communication, and spent five-years in corporate sales with a notional logistics and distribution firm. Jay returned to school in 2005 and earned his Juris Doctrate from the University of Missouri School of Law where he graduated with honors.
Jay lives in Columbia with his wife Haley and their four children.
