As the president/CEO of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mehan
oversees the operation of the state’s largest business association with more
than 3,000 employers that provide jobs for more than 425,000 Missouri employees.
Under Mehan’s leadership, the Missouri Chamber governmental affairs team has
achieved strong results for Missouri employers, including civil justice reform
and broad workers’ compensation reform. The Missouri Chamber has also been
instrumental in holding the line on employers’ taxes and has helped secure
numerous economic development initiatives.
In addition to legislative efforts, Mehan has built the Missouri Chamber PAC,
the political action affiliate of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry,
into one of the strongest forces in Missouri's political arena. The
Missouri Chamber PAC has played a key role in helping elect a pro-business
administration and legislature. The Missouri Chamber PAC has also helped
lead several successful political issue campaigns, including the campaign to
pass critical transportation funding initiative in 2002, and a campaign to
defeat an initiative to tax employers to fund political campaigns in 1998.
Mehan also oversees the Missouri Chamber Education Foundation. The
educational arm of the chamber is a business/education partnership that provides
statewide programs for middle school, high school and college students, teachers
and other adult leaders. The programs are designed to teach character,
economics, finance and leadership, foster business/education partnerships in
communities, as well as bring local business leaders in face-to-face dialogue
with students.
The Missouri Chamber also provides several innovative products and services
to help Missouri businesses better compete. Health insurance, pharmacy
discounts, 401k plan management, voluntary employee benefits, and human resource
publications and website are part of this package of employer resources.
In addition to his work with the Missouri Chamber, Mehan also serves on
numerous boards and commissions. Mehan is the Chairman of the Midwest China
Hub Commission. Mehan also is a member of the Missouri Hawthorn Foundation board
of directors. He
serves on the Missouri Technology Corporation board of directors. He also serves
on the Missouri Mathematics and Science Coalition. In addition, Mehan is
president of the Missouri Society of Association Executives.
Before joining the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1995, Mehan
was employed by Washington University, St. Louis, as a director of development
for Arts and Sciences. Mehan has been involved in several statewide campaigns
and regional fund raising. He also was a staff assistant to U.S. Sen.
Christopher “Kit” Bond.
A native of St. Louis, Mehan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics
from the University of Pennsylvania-Philadelphia. He lives in Jefferson City
with his wife Ellen and two daughters Cecilia and Katy.
